According to statistics provided by W3Techs the most popular Content Management System (CMS) is WordPress. It is used by 18.9% of all the websites. It forms content management system market share of 57.1%. The other big competitors: Joomla and Drupal are quite behind the leader.
WordPress was built as a blogging platform but it has evolved to be used as full content management system and can be used for different purposes – including building a classifieds site. That makes them in fact our competitor. This is why we would like to show some facts to prove that Open Classifieds is a perfect solution for listings and advertisements and that we are not afraid of a big opponent.
Both WordPress and Open Classifieds are Open Source project. It means both scripts are free and built by and for community. Of course OC cannot compete in size with WP that involves work of hundreds volunteers all over the world who develop thousands of plugins and other extensions. But being small and focused on one topic also has some benefits…
So what are our main advantages?
Speed: Open Classifieds works faster due to many specific performance points. SQL optimized, caches, minified and not loading anything that should not makes it way faster. All of this out of the box without any plugin!
Technology: Open Classifieds is based on PHP 5.3.X and using Model View Controller pattern to make all code more readable and easy to understand. We used Kohana framework as a base so we are not reinventing the wheel.
Specialization: Our strength is that we are focused on just one kind of websites and we are specialists in our field. WordPress is good for blogging and good for other purposes, but if you want to build a classifieds site you should choose a script that is dedicated specially for this. Then you can be sure that all features that you might need are already implemented in the script and you don’t need to add any extensions. On the contrary, to use WordPress as a CMS for classifieds you need to install special plugins.
Stability: This is somehow connected with specialization, because script prepared for a certain purposes has to be more stable than collection of plugins and widgets that are not always fully compatible. Problem with WordPress is that there are thousands of available extensions, but not all of them work good together. Installing new plugins is kinda risky, because you never know if it will work good with what you have already. What is more, even when you think you have it all figured out, update of one of your extensions can suddenly make it not compatible with the rest. In result you can experience some problems with the site or even its complete breakdown. Open Classifieds on other hand has everything integrated and therefore works more stable.
Translations: Open Classifieds is fully available in multiple languages. When it comes to WordPress – it is of course translated to many languages, but with a lot of plugins some will be available in your language and some not…
