We live in a post-PC era. It means that instead of using traditional desktop or laptop computers more and more mobile devices as smartphones and tablets are used. Their use nearly doubled in the last year (2012-2013). Mobile share in all web traffic is now around 25% on average.
Why is this happening? It’s simple. Mobile devices are more comfortable, you carry it with you and can use whenever you want. They are also more affordable what makes it popular in developing countries, where the growth of number of Internet users and devices used for browsing the web is most dynamic. The image below illustrates how amount of web traffic from mobiles differs between continents – maybe it’s not the newest data, but shows the tendency clearly.
As Flurry report shows, the U.S. consumer spends an average of 2 hours and 38 minutes per day on smartphones and tablets. 80% of that time (2 hours and 7 minutes) is spent inside apps and 20% (31 minutes) is spent on the mobile web. That amount of time can’t be ignored. Web has to change and adapt to the rise of mobile devices. Reality of smartphones and tablets will influence how the websites are created to fit user needs. This is why it is so important to put some extra effort in increasing visibility of your site on mobiles. For users of Open Classifieds it means that they should consider building an optimized mobile version of their website complimentary to the desktop version (using mobile theme), create an app for their classifieds or at least invest in the premium theme offering responsive design.
